Type legal

Terms of Service

These Terms of Service govern your use of Type, a writing application provided by Tonic Studios LLC ("Type," "we," "us," or "our"). Tonic Studios is the company's brand and registered fictitious name. By creating an account or using Type, you agree to these Terms.

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required in your country to consent to online services. If you are under the age of legal majority, a parent or guardian must approve your use.

2. Your account

Optional sign-in is provided by Tonic ID, Tonic Studios LLC's separate shared identity service with its own terms and privacy notice. You are responsible for activity under your identity and maintaining access to your device and sign-in methods. Type stores a non-secret app profile, Type-specific legal acceptance, portable preferences, profile-lifecycle events, premium-entitlement status, and an opaque record of the currently active Type installation in Type's separate account database. Type permits one active signed-in installation at a time. Switching installations removes the previous installation's server access but does not delete writing stored there. A local profile cache and any Type-specific profile-picture file remain on the device. You may instead use your shared Tonic ID profile picture; a Type-specific picture does not replace the picture managed in Tonic ID. Tonic ID stores authentication credentials, verified identity, linked providers, sessions, and the shared profile picture separately. Type remains usable for local writing while signed out.

After a material policy release, Type keeps any locally cached profile details readable and keeps profile deletion available even without a cached Type profile, but pauses profile edits, new device activation, server-backed settings writes, and new Premium checkout until you accept the current Type Terms and Privacy Policy. Billing management and purchase restoration remain available so you can manage existing obligations without accepting a new policy.

3. Your writing and files

You retain ownership of writing, documents, themes, fonts, sounds, images, and other content you create or import. You grant Type only the limited permission needed to store, process, display, export, back up, and synchronize that content as requested by you. You must have the rights needed to use, embed, back up, and transfer imported fonts and other third-party material. Type does not claim ownership of your writing or imported fonts.

4. Type intellectual property

Rights in Type's original software, interface, branding, and original assets are held by Tonic Studios LLC, contributors, or licensors as applicable under the relevant agreements and law. This notice does not itself transfer ownership. Third-party software, fonts, sounds, and other materials remain owned by their respective rights holders and are used under their applicable licenses.

5. Acceptable use

Do not use Type to violate law, infringe rights, distribute malicious code, interfere with the service, bypass security, or access another person's account or content without permission.

6. Backups and availability

You are responsible for maintaining exports or backups of important work. Local browser or device storage can be cleared, corrupted, restricted, or lost. Features may change, be interrupted, or be discontinued.

7. Third-party services

Optional providers such as Apple, Google, Dropbox, Microsoft, and cloud-storage services are governed by their own terms and privacy practices. The CarpeDiction selection lookup is temporarily disabled in normal Type builds. While it is disabled, selecting text or typing performs no CarpeDiction lookup or availability request. In a focused build where the lookup is explicitly enabled, a lookup sends only a word or short phrase after you select that text and choose the lookup action. Type requests the dictionary first; each other lexical source is requested only if you open its collapsed card. Selecting text or typing does not send it. An enabled build may send CarpeDiction a content-free availability request when the editor opens or returns after at least ten minutes of inactivity to reduce free-host startup delay; it does not send periodic keep-alive requests. Type is not responsible for third-party services or lexical-result accuracy.

8. Paid features

When purchasing is available, Type offers monthly and yearly subscriptions. The USD base prices are 3.99 per month and 29.99 per year. Only offers shown as available can be purchased. Monthly and yearly subscriptions automatically renew at the disclosed interval until cancelled. The checkout shows the applicable tax, final amount, billing interval, and available payment methods before you commit. Paddle is the reseller and Merchant of Record for Type web orders and handles payment processing and billing inquiries under its buyer terms and refund rules. Type product support remains available at help@tonicstudios.org. No sign-in, billing permission, policy acceptance, checkout opening, or browser return alone creates a paid entitlement.

An administrator may grant Premium access separately from a purchase. This grant is not a subscription or an offer for sale. This wording correction does not change rights attached to earlier purchases or grants. Deleting only a Type app profile is different from deleting Tonic ID and does not cancel a provider purchase.

Payments are non-refundable, including subscription renewals and one-time purchases, except where required by law. Type does not offer change-of-mind refunds, prorated refunds, or credits for unused time. Mandatory consumer rights and Paddle’s applicable buyer terms and refund policy, including refunds Paddle may grant, still apply.

This policy applies to purchases made under this version after publication. Earlier purchases, and renewals governed by their earlier terms, keep the refund rights promised at purchase. This update does not remove those rights.

Read Paddle’s Buyer Terms at https://www.paddle.com/legal/buyer-terms and Refund Policy at https://www.paddle.com/legal/refund-policy. Submit refund requests through https://paddle.net/. Paddle assesses requests under applicable law, its buyer policies and its operational discretion.

Request billing help or a refund you may be entitled to through Paddle at https://paddle.net or contact help@tonicstudios.org for help finding the appropriate path. Cancel a subscription through Manage billing or Paddle's buyer support before its next renewal to stop further renewal. Cancellation is not a refund: verified paid subscription access continues through its paid-through date; then that paid source ends. A confirmed full refund or chargeback revokes its associated paid access. A partial adjustment requires review and does not automatically change access. Any separate administrator-granted Premium access remains independent. Mandatory consumer rights and Paddle's applicable buyer protections are not reduced by these Terms.

For Tonic ID deletion during an active paid term, the default is to cancel renewal and defer deletion until the paid-through date. An explicit immediate-deletion choice ends access immediately. Deletion is not a refund request. Native Type apps may cache a signed, time-limited Premium lease for offline use. Expiration affects Premium features only and never locks local writing. Browser Premium access requires an online account session. Any future app-store purchase is also governed by that store's billing and refund rules; these web terms do not claim store availability.

9. Disclaimers

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Type is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of uninterrupted operation, fitness for a particular purpose, or freedom from data loss. Nothing in these Terms excludes rights that cannot legally be excluded.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Tonic Studios LLC will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost writing, profits, data, or opportunities arising from Type. Applicable consumer law may provide additional rights.

11. Suspension and termination

You may stop using Type at any time. Deleting a Type profile removes its current server profile, synced portable preferences, and active Type installation session but does not cancel or refund a purchase and does not delete your Tonic ID, profiles in other Tonic Studios apps, local writing, exports, or user-controlled backups. Deleting Tonic ID automatically requests deletion of the current Type server profile and synced portable preferences before the central identity is removed. Local writing, Type-specific profile pictures, exports, and user-controlled backups remain on the device or provider until you remove them. Limited profile-lifecycle, purchase, purchase-claim, entitlement, device-session, security, and legal records may remain where needed to preserve or recover a purchase, prevent abuse, resolve disputes, or comply with law. We may restrict access where reasonably necessary to protect users, comply with law, or address material violations of these Terms.

12. Changes

We may update these Terms. Material changes will be presented for renewed acceptance where required. Type records its document version and acceptance time with the Type app profile, separately from Tonic ID's account consent. Before a new web checkout, Type requires explicit acceptance of the current purchase terms and refund policy and acknowledgment of the current Privacy Policy. Tonic ID records that policy version and server-assigned time with the checkout operation. Managing an existing paid relationship does not require accepting new purchase terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Virginia, United States, without overriding consumer protections that apply where you live.

14. Contact

Legal questions and correspondence may be sent to legal@tonicstudios.org. Product help may be requested at help@tonicstudios.org. Do not send passwords, provider tokens, or other authentication secrets.
